DEATH GULCH
Visited on 10/16/04
Asphyxiated animals (including grizzly bears) have been found here (see Aubrey Haines: "The Yellowstone Story." I did not descend into the un-vegetated bottom because there would be no value in readings taken there from a plant physiology perspective. However, I lowered the meter down from the adjacent ridges and found 500-750ppm currents that I assume were of low volume because they were strongly affected by incidental winds, occurring only in erratic episodes. Many other areas that I visited this summer were much more impressive from a CO2 perspective. Maybe unique topology in this area sometimes prevents wind from dispersing the relatively weak source, allowing it to accumulate to lethal levels. Or maybe this area was once more active. Or maybe the famous grizzly bears died of H2S poisoning rather than CO2 asphyxia.
I took measurements throughout the forest above and around this area. Nothing notable was found.
I am including Death Gulch in this report because of its fame, but it would not make a good study site.
